BBFC

What is the institution responsible for? How is it funded? What link does it have to government?

The BBFC is modified to show information, which is always written in short and briefly so its easier for people to understand. It also shows and outlines all the films that have been published. The director of the BBFC added on that their was a large increase in the amount of people that decided in their own favour to make new original films but on the other hand don't have the equipment to be able to do so.

The BBFC has supported fund those people without the facilities and this costed £50+VAT for films that are up to 20 minutes long and films that cost £100+VAT for films to are between 20 and 40 minutes long.

The rating of the film depends on many things, because their are time where films are rated in groups but sometimes it is done individually which is also known as 'solo viewing A motion picture rating system is designated to classify films with regard to suitability for audiences in terms of issues such as sex, violence, substance abuse, profanity, impudence or other types of mature content. A particular issued rating can be called a certificationclassificationcertificate or rating. Ratings typically carry age recommendations in an advisory or restrictive capacity, and are often given in lieu of censorship. In some jurisdictions the legal obligation of administering the rating may be imposed on movie theatres.

What are the guidelines for a 15 certificate?

The guidelines for a 15 certificate film

  • Strong violence
  • strong Language
  •  sexual activities
  • Strong references to sex
  • Nudity
  • Drugs

The Dark Knight was rated 12A, this was rather controversial as many people believed that this rating was a little  to low for a film as such. This is the case due to the violence generated in this film. 12A guidelines allow moderate violence as long as it can be justified by the context. However, many people thought that the dark knight should have been a 15 age rating or even 18.

My movie example is Attack the Block. This was firstly Classified by BBFC as to be a 15un ,  due to the fact that it is a hybrid genre of comedy, mixed with horror AND science-fiction - a very unusual and bizarre genres put together, and maybe this appeals to teenagers of our generation, who have unconventional views and like a mix of things.

Art-house films analysis

Movie clip- Girl Hood

This movie is mainly about a black girl, known as Marieme , who decides to join a girl gang. Marieme starts a new life after meeting a group of 3 free-spirited girls. She changes her name, her dress code, and quits school to be accepted in the gang, hoping that this will be a way to freedom. Reinventing herself and gaining a sense of self confidence in the process. However, she later noticed that her choice of joining the girl gang didn't do do her any good and  doesn't make any happier but instead leads her to the wrong paths.
This Art-house film follows the typical stereotypes of black teenagers of joining gangs. In this movie we can see that a black educated girl who drops out of school in order to join a gang.

Within this clip, we can see Marieme being taught how to a dance . We see the dominant representation of black people, causing problems, shouting loud in a public service transport and bitchy. The costumes used reflect the characters carefully. For example, the main protagonist of this movie, is dancing and singing on the train. This helps the audience too instantly see the visual representation of unstable behaviour  and so reflects her character quickly to the audience.

This clip of Marieme learning to dance for her first time utilizes many editing techniques. There's lots of use of close ups and medium close ups. This is effective because the close ups reveals to the audience who the main actors of this movie is. Also, the use of the close up allows us to see the characters facial expression and their attitude. Furthermore, the producer employed many medium close ups to allows the viewers to see what the characters are doing in this scene. To add on this, the producer employs a panning/tracking shot. This is evident when the camera focuses on Marieme and then there's a slow pan shot and the camera moves slowly to her friend.

Movie Clip-  Eternal Sunshine of the spotless Mind

This movie is mainly about a man, who is heart broken that his girl friend decided to continue her life without him and underwent a procedure to erase him for her memory. He decides to the same and goes trough a painful time as he watches his memories of his girl friend fade away. He notices that he still holds feelings for her and so therefore tries hard to get her back but it might be too late. This clip as we can see is shows a the main protagonist coming into a library and having one to one conversation with his girl friend.  And this clip itself perfectly fits the movie plot of him trying to get her back and finally stops going through depression and regret.

This Art-house film follows the typical stereotypes and representation  of love couples of breaking up, not having any more feelings for them, depression and hard work. All stereotypes is shown evident in this clip. In this clip we can the see that the main protagonist has appeared at her work place to try win her back. It's hard work because he keeps trying to persuade her and even though she gives him hints that she is keen about it he still goes back.

The producer employs many editing techniques to reveal to the audience more effectively. Within this clip we can a great use of over-the-shoulder shot and tracking shot. The use of the over-the-shoulder shot is really effective in this scene because it reveals to the audience that the love story is about them too and shows that they are having a conversation. Also there's use of tracking shot and this is evident when the lady walks off the stack the shelves and the camera slowly follows the character. This is effective because allows the audience to feel that they also there in the scene.

The target audience of this movie ' Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind' is a teenage audience.

Movie Clip- It follows

This movie follows the genre of Horror, mystery and Thriller. This movie is mainly about a nineteen year old girl who should be about school, boys and week-ends at the lake. But then everything is corrupted after her innocent sexual encounter. Later, she finds herself plagued by strange visions and the inescapable sense that someone, something, is following her, she experiences great fear and regret. Faced with burden, Jay and her friends must find a way to escape from the horrors.

This Art-house film follows the typical stereotypes and representation  of young teenage girls of having sex early, which causes many problems in their life. This example of a young teenage girls representations is clearly evident within this video  because we see a the story of a teenage school girl who had sex and leads to her an her friends being in a horrific state.

This movie utilizes lots of unique editing skills to appeal to its target audience. Firstly, at the beginning of the clip we see a man with a torch walking down a dark car park. This is really effective because its mysterious and it leaves the audience clueless. Furthermore, the colour scheme of this clip fits perfectly to the fillm genre as well as the dialogue of "i'll follow you" which is rather scary. In the background we can hear their footsteps as the wind passes by, this indicates that the places is abandoned, which fits best for a mystery film.

Movie Clip- Donnie Darko

This movie follows the genre of Drama and Sci-fi.  This movie is mainly about a soft man called Donnie Darko. He doesn't  get along too well with his family, his teachers and his classmates; but he does manage to secure himself a sympathetic friend, who agrees to date him. He finds himself a compassionate psychiatrist and tries to support him. This movies target audience is of teenagers.

This clip employs many editing techniques to appeal to its audience. For example; the camerawork showed an 180 degree cut between the two characters which shows that the two characters are having a one to one conversations. This makes the audiences see the lady as a consultant. The camerwork and shots fit perfectly to an ordinary interview.

Also, the producer employed a sound bridge and this was evident within this clip. The sound bridge was really effective because it supports the viwers to learn and understand more about Donnie Darko past life and experience. The sound bridge is smooth and calm, which shows that the boy had a pleasant past with a lot of happy memories and now that he is grown up he might have possibly suffered

Movie Clip- The man without a past

This movie follows the genre of comedy, drama and romance. This movie is mainly about a man who arrives in Helsinki and then later gets into a fight, where he is severely beaten up, he gets amnesia. After he wakes up he forgets all his memories such as; his name. his address, his details and everything else from his past life. Therefore, with no support or money he starts living on the outskirts of the city. He tries hard to put his life back on track.

The camera work in this clip is unique and very detailed. This clip of 'The man without a past ' employs a medium close up at the start. This is effective because it tells the audience that he's the main protagonist. this is supported by the fact that the camera mainly focused on him and most question were answered by him.
Furthermore, theres use of continutity cuts which shows that they having a three-way-conversation.
